Admiral Arleigh Burke stands as one of the most influential figures in modern naval history. This definitive biography by renowned historian E.B. Potter traces Burke's remarkable journey from his Naval Academy days through his legendary destroyer operations in the Solomon Islands—where he earned the nickname "31-Knot Burke"—to his pivotal role in World War II carrier operations. Potter provides comprehensive coverage of Burke's transformative postwar career, including his service as a United Nations delegate during Korean truce negotiations and his groundbreaking six-year tenure as Chief of Naval Operations (1955–1961). During this period, Burke championed carrier aviation, nuclear propulsion, and spearheaded development of the Navy's Polaris missile program—innovations that fundamentally shaped modern naval warfare. A recipient of the Medal of Freedom, Burke became the first living U.S. naval officer to have a ship class named after him. The Arleigh Burke guided missile destroyers remain a cornerstone of the Navy today. This 1990 biography, now available in paperback, offers an authoritative and compelling portrait of a naval strategist whose legacy continues to influence naval operations and doctrine. Essential reading for history enthusiasts, military scholars, and anyone interested in twentieth-century American naval power.
