The Teacher Review
After reading The Teacher by Freida McFadden, I am not at all sure what to think. I defintely enjoyed the book, but the ending was certainly a wild outcome. I am intrigued to see what you all have to say about the story. It had me hooked from the beginning. I finished the entire novel in two days. As a teacher myself, I have to admit I was quite uncomfortable with both teachers' behavior. I felt as though I was drawn to Eve, and I pitied her throughout the story; however, after finishing the book I don't know who I pity anymore, if anyone at all. Both Eve and Nathaniel were clearly unhappy in their lives/marriage, but they both also seemed quite disturbed-possibly more disturbed than they made Addie out to be. Perhaps Eve fell for a much younger man because she missed out on the childhood relatioinship when she was a teenager herself. Addie seemed to be a typical emotional teen; however, a little more violent than most. She seems to have had very little sympathy/remorse for her actions, which was disconcerting at times. The most obvious twist was the reveal of Jay at the end, and it led me to develop many questions:
Is Jay (Hudson) a psychopath?
Where did Eve go?
Will Jay ever tell Addie what he helped Eve do, and would Addie even care given her past?
How are two teenagers so okay after all of the trauma they have endured and/or caused?
Is it possible Nathaniel survived in the same way Eve survived?
Just how many girls did Nathaniel manipulate, and was Eve even the first one?
When Nathaniel said that he could have divorced Eve long ago, but she knew too much about him, what was he referring to? I assume the fact that he was a teacher and she was his student at the time they began dating, but maybe there was something else about him she knew?
Why do you think Eve had such an obsession with expensive shoes?
Lastly, and in my opinion, most importantly, if Nathaniel was such an amazing English teacher/poet, then why did he use the same silly poem for every single girl?
