Bringing Back Lazy Summer Days

It’s been a minute since Sadey or I have posted anything on the blog. But let’s be real—life has been lifing. Sadey recently gave birth to a beautiful baby girl while also chasing around her very active five-year-old. And me? Well, I’m deep in the throes of the preteen and teenage years with my boys. They may not be quite as rambunctious as they used to be, but our life is definitely no less busy.
With summer fast approaching—well honestly, it’s already here—I’ve been feeling a little nostalgic for summers past. I think back to those childhood summers before jobs and responsibilities were even part of the equation. The days when I could sleep in, watch TV, and read until my little introverted heart was completely content. And honestly? I miss those simple days more than I’d like to admit.
These days, moments like that feel few and far between.
So I guess what I’m saying is this summer, I want to find that young girl again. Even if it’s only for an hour after I finish working for the day, or a few hours on a rainy Saturday afternoon, I want to truly enjoy my summer. I want those lazy summer moments to linger a little longer. I want to lounge in the sun, drink coffee while watching the birds outside, maybe play badminton or pickleball with my boys for awhile—even if I’ll probably regret it afterward.
Because somewhere along the way, as moms and working adults in general, we get so caught up in the daily to-do lists and routines that we forget to stop and enjoy what’s already right in front of us.
The long summer grass swaying in the wind. The squirrels playing chase with one another—or with my dog, who is still fully convinced she’s going to catch one someday. The warmth of the sun on your skin after a quick walk to the mailbox. Sometimes it’s as simple as turning off the doomsday news for a few minutes and stepping outside to just be.
So this is my challenge to you this summer: find a moment or two to pause. Really smell the dang roses. Walk outside barefoot if you’re feeling adventurous. Let the smell of summer fill the air around you and remind you that life doesn’t always have to move so fast.
Our summers don’t have to be elaborate.
They don’t have to be expensive.
We just have to be present.
